Where a bear the page does not colour belongs. The book names two, and both have entries — Ursus arctos the bear of the forest border, which it calls brown on two pages and black on four, and Ursus maritimus the polar bear of the sea-ice. But much of the book says only bear: the bear of 1-350's tale who lets the fox heal his wounds with red-hot stones, the one the Kamchadal track in late spring (1-150), the reˊkkeñ that appears bear-sized in the open (2-023). Those mentions name no species and this entry does not give them one.

A good many bare bears are not undetermined at all — they are the polar bear, carried through a paragraph that named it once and then dropped the adjective (1-183, 1-184, 2-135). The carcass ceremonial is the hardest of these: 2-135 and 2-136 run the whale and the bear together and colour neither, though the head-feast they describe is the polar bear's.
