St. Lawrence Island
The island in the northern Bering Sea, off the mouth of the Anadyr and about 60 km from the Chukotka coast. The book meets it as the other end of a trade route: Chukchee crews go over in boats for reindeer-skins, and kettles and other goods come back from it (1-051, 1-086, 1-104).
Filing it under Bering Strait is an editorial grouping, not a hydrographic claim — strictly the island lies in the northern Bering Sea, south of the strait proper. It hangs there because the strait is the crossing the book actually describes. Not to be confused with St. Lawrence Bay on the Chukotka coast, Lavrentiya Bay.
