The Yupik village on the northwest cape of St. Lawrence Island, and the modern Gambell, Alaska — GeoNames still heads the settlement under the native name and files "Gambell" as the alternate. The English name is a memorial to Vene C. Gambell and his wife, missionaries there 1894–1898, and post-dates the village by however long the village has stood; Bogoras writes only the native form.

One mention: at 1-164 its inhabitants are named with the Eskimo of Chaplino (town), Cape Chukotsky and Sirenik as the people still whaling on the Pacific, "all use explosive harpoons" — the only place in the whaling passage where the book crosses to the American side.

The village is also called Sivuqaq, which is the Yupik name of the island, St. Lawrence Island, as well.
