Syphilis
The one disease in the section whose Chukchee name says in so many words that it is a Being. Bogoras parses aˊtal-vaˊɪrg̣ɪn on 1-063 as aˊtal “Chuvantzy” + vaˊɪrg̣ɪn “substance” — vaˊɪrg̣ɪn being the word 2-040 heads a section with, “Other ‘Beings’” (vaˊɪrg̣ɪt), and that 1-073 glosses the other way in the same breath: qaˊa-vaˊɪrg̣ɪn, “literally, ‘reindeer substance’”. The name is the Chuvan Being, and it is why the section's diseases are filed among the Beings.
The etymology is also an aetiology, and Bogoras says so: the Chukchee “regard it as indigenous”, but the name points at the Chuvans, “the tribe who in earlier times were mediators between the Russians and the Chukchee, and probably, after obtaining the disease from the Russians, introduced it among the Chukchee.”
