Martes americana
A fur that crossed the strait, not an animal of the country. Bogoras settles the identification himself at 1-078: the marten peltries and marten garments of the Anyui fair "came from the American shore … all from America, since these animals are not found in Asia."
The book keeps marten and sable apart throughout, and they are two animals from two continents: the sable of Martes zibellina comes down the Kolyma, this one comes across from Alaska.
Two mentions sit inside translated seventeenth-century Cossack reports and are not observations. 3-156 inventories the land across the strait as holding "sables and martens, foxes, polar foxes, wolves, wolverenes, polar bears, marine beavers (sea-otters)" — hearsay, and no sable lives there; the pair is Russian trade vocabulary rather than two identified animals. This entry claims the fur, not a range.
