Tumanskaya Fair

One of the three fairs opened in the Anadyr district in the fifteen years before the book, "on the west (Plate III, Fig. 1), near the mountain Iˊrg̣u-ñei ('pointed mountain'), chiefly for the Telqäˊp Chukchee" (1-080). In 1901 heavy snows brought only two Telqäˊp camps to it.

The exact placement is uncertain. Bogoras's map puts it some way east of the eastern affluent of Red Lake; the coordinate above is the editor's reading of that map, and the mountain the text names is not identified here.

Filed under Krasnaya and not Tumanskaya, though it carries that river's name. The point falls inside the Krasnaya's basin and about 1.4° west of the Tumanskaya's, and the text agrees: the fair is "on the west," chiefly for the Telqäˊp Chukchee, who came to it from their own river. The name says whose fair it was, not where it stood.
