Caucasoids
The racial type, never the Caucasus: all three occurrences stand for Europeans in general, and the book has no occasion to mention the mountains or the peoples who live in them.
Bogoras uses it as his baseline of comparison in chapter II, and each time to narrow a difference his readers would have assumed — Chukchee eyes are straight and often as large, the body hair is scarcely distinguishable (1-056). 3-060 puts it to a different use, reaching for the scarcity of "blood really Russian and Caucasian" to explain why marriages between Russians and Chukchee on the Kolyma are childless.
What the category is worth, and what this edition does and does not claim by recording it, is Physical anthropology.
