iuˊmetun
“Another disease of a like character is iuˊmetun, a kind of violent nervous affection, which comes on at night like nightmare. During an attack the breath appears shortened, the blood rushes to the face, and sometimes the sufferer chokes on the spot” (1-064). Paired with iteˊyun as spirit-caused, its name likewise not spoken, and shunned the same way.
Identification: unresolved. Two candidates, and the account does not choose between them or exclude a combination. Sleep apnoea covers the nocturnal onset, the shortened breath and the choking. Carbon-monoxide poisoning covers the flushed face and the sudden death, and the sleeping-room is the setting for it — a small closed skin chamber warmed and lit by a blubber lamp through the night. Neither is adopted here.
