Œstrus tarandi
The first of 1-108's "two kinds of reindeer-flies", and one insect under two names: "(Œstrus tarandi Nordenskiöld, Tabanus tarandinus Slunin)". It lays its eggs on the hair, the maggot burrows into the epidermis and grows "to the size of a hazel-nut", and the herdsmen "very dexterously pick out these maggots … and eat them with great relish."
The other fly, of the nostrils, is Œdemagena tarandi — see its gloss for why the pair must not be reconciled against modern usage.
