"In the middle of the seventeenth century, Deshneff, in his well-known report to the government about his travels and discoveries, mentions, in connection with the Chuvantzy, the tribe or the clan of the Anauly" (1-038, footnote). Identifying him with Semyon Dezhnyov, whose name the modern chart carries at Dezhnyovo, is the obvious reading, not the book's own statement. See Chuvans.
