Arctic hysteria
“The well-known form of Arctic hysteria, which is so widespread among the Yukaghir and Even women, is very rare among the Chukchee, especially among the Reindeer branch of the tribe” (1-064). What Bogoras describes is the imitative form and only that: “an uncontrollable desire to repeat in a loud voice each word spoken by somebody else, and to imitate every sudden gesture or action”. Russianized native women and Russians have it considerably; Chukchee women are “practically exempt”.
Echolalia and echopraxia on startle — the syndrome Russian ethnography calls мирячение, and the same shape as latah. It is not the convulsive possession illness the label “arctic hysteria” is also used for, and the two should not be merged on the strength of the English name. Bogoras gives no Chukchee word, consistently with his saying they do not have it.
